The Gifted
The Gifted. Few can recount their experience of 'The Calling', or how the intricate black designs made a home beneath their skin. These dark ominous insignias became known as The Imprint, a testament to their stubborn and brand-like nature. Shortly after being marked, the individuals who have been 'Called' undergo an excruciating metamorphosis. This event is often called The Awakening, given its occurrence shortly upon being roused from sleep. During this phase, the Imprint begins to burn, inflicting a searing and unbearable pain upon their carrier. The agony can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Those whose mentally cannot endure the experience become Reapers, Gifted who have lost all sense of their humanity. And those who do survive call themselves The Gifted, often harnessing new powers and abilities upon fully Awakening.
Each gift appears unique to each individual, often correlating with a specific incident in their past or present. Many Gifted take great pains to control their giftings despite the Imprint being a painful hindrance. Each New Moon there is a Calling. New individuals and citizens from all over the city migrate to unknown locations throughout the night. Though the Gifted harness a deep connection with this unknown force, they are able to resist the urge to be 'called' again. However, during the New Moon and the moon phases approaching it, the Gifted are at their strongest.
It has been recently discovered that the potency of their abilities is directly related to the phase of the moon. After the New Moon has passed, Gifted find the strength of their gifts begins to diminish and their abilities are easier to control. When the Full Moon arrives, many Gifted are unable to use their gifts at all. However as the moon begins to wane and the New Moon drawers closer, the Gifted regain their supernatural strength. The one exception appears to be the Reapers whose gifts are only affected by their own peace of mind. The more docile in nature they are, the more they are able to control their gift.

Reapers
Reapers...at First, they might almost trick you into thinking they're normal, but there's something off about them. The Reapers are Gifted who couldn't survive the Awakening with their sanity intact. Though they are physically alive, many of them act as no more than empty shells. Reapers are totally insane, some more than others. They are driven by a common need to survive and find satisfaction in exhorting their abilities. Unfortunately, this obsession often leads to the death or injuries of many civilians and the Reaper's growing reputation of cannibalism. Unlike the other Gifted, Reaper's abilities don't follow the flux of the moon cycle. They are consistent in power from the beginning of the month, through the end. Given their dangerous potential, Reapers are often hunted by Gifted and Seekers alike.
Seekers
The Seekers began as a volunteer Night Watch/Search and Rescue team. Every night they went from door to door, ensuring civilians remained indoors, and keeping a vigilant watch over the town. It was their duty to recover and safely return any missing persons, and do everything they could to discover the source of the 'Calling'. However when an entire Search and Rescue team was brutally murdered by a single Reaper, The Seekers made it their priority to protect Mapleridge and ensure the eviction of every Gifted civilian. Once the heroes of their town, the Seekers have now become the bane of the Gifted. They seek only to destroy and remove the civilians they deem 'unnatural'. They work as an organization to purge the city of the Gifted, often launching propaganda and campaigns that have forced a rather oppressive stigma upon the Gifted still living in the city. Their unorthodox methods of dealing with Gifted and Reapers alike have given civilians more than enough reason to fear an impending conflict ahead.
