The torii gate is the single remnant of a memorial temple that was supposed to be constructed many years ago. When the project founder passed away, the city moved the memorial location to Sakura gardens within the city. Still, the Torii gate remains. In Japanese culture, the gate used to symbolize the passage from profane to sacred ground. Ironically, this very gate marks the passage from Mapleridge to the hidden Sanctuary of the Gifted.

Cougar Canyon is the most popular place for mountain climbing. The steep cliff faces offer a challenge both for beginners and intermediate climbers who wish to climb. Hikers can follow the trails down into the canyon as well and spend their day next to the river. However, be warned. The canyon didn't get it's name by fluke.

Beneath the forest lies an intricate labyrinth of tunnels and small caves. These tunnels are often closely monitored and patrolled given the danger of landfills or missing people. Many have wandered here during the Calling only to be discovered weeks later dead due to a tunnel having collapsed or having been unable to find their way out. Many tunnel explorers must prepare themselves for whatever they might see and keep track of which paths they've traveled.
